Science Week

Magic bag (First Class)
You will need:
·       A pencil
·       A bag
·       Water
Method:
1.     Fill the bag to nearly full with water.
2.     Pierce the bag with a sharp pencil.
3.     Watch what happens.
Result:
·       No water leaked because the molecules made a film to protect it.

Walking water (First Class)

You will need:
·       Food colouring
·       3 cups
·       Tissue
·       Water
Method:
1.     Pour water into the cups.
2.     Put 3 drops of food colouring into each cup.
3.     Put tissue into two cups.
4.     Put both ends of the tissue into the third cup.
5.     Leave over night and see what happens.
Result:
·       The water walked into the third cup.

Marvellous Milk (First Class)

You will need:
·       Food colouring
·       Cotton buds.
·       Milk
·       Washing up liquid
·       A cup
·       A tray
Method:
1.     Pour the milk onto the tray.
2.     Fill the cup with washing up liquid.
3.     Use the cotton buds distribute the washing up liquid.
4.     Watch what happens.
Result:
·       It spread around.

Chocolate Cake

Chocolate Cake by First Class

We used our Maths skills and knowledge as part of science to make a delicious chocolate. We measured out all our ingredients for our chocolate cake and then we used our scientific skills to melt the chocolate on top to make a yummy topping. We really enjoyed this project and it tasted amazing!

Scratch

First Class have been participating in the Irish Computer Society Scratch programme. They have learned lots of new skills and have really enjoyed it. They have even downloaded the programme onto their own tablets at home to get more practice. It has been a really fun experience.
Here are some pictures of the children working on Scratch.

STEM showcase

STEM Showcase

5th and 6th Classes worked on JEP projects and showcased these to the rest of the school. They worked very hard on their projects and incorporated science, technology, maths and engineering into their work as well as working as a team. They presented their work excellently and all classes thoroughly enjoyed it. Here are some photos from the day.

How sound waves travel

Third Class were learning all about how sound waves travel and they visited First Class to show them how they got on. They worked on this together and both classes learned a lot about sound waves and also had fun in explaining their work.

How sound waves travel (Third Class)
Your will need:
·       A bowl
·       Cling film
·       A baking tray
·       A wooden spoon
·       Sugar
Method:
1.     Stretch the cling firm tightly over the bowl.
2.     Sprinkle a small amount of sugar onto the cling film.
3.     Hold the baking tray.
4.     Watch what happens.
Result:
·       Sound makes the sugar jump which causes the sugar to travel.

Capacity

Measuring Capacity by Second Class
What we did:
We were measuring how much water could fit in different containers. Before we measured we estimated our answers.

What we used:
We used different containers and they were; a yogurt carton, a jug, a saucepan, a bowl, a lunchbox and a basin filled with water.
What we found out:
We found out how many yogurt cartons it took to fill each container. We also found out that some containers held the same amount of water even though they were different shapes and sizes.

Why containers can hold the same amount:
Containers can hold the same amount because some are wide and short but others are tall and skinny.

We all enjoyed measuring capacity.

Design and make activity

Fifth Class worked on some activities that incorporated Engineering.

Group One
We used two pieces of paper to make a bridge in our groups. Our bridge was made by making box lids out of a piece of a paper and with the other half we fanned it to hold the middle of the bridge.
The main part of the bridge was made by putting nearly the whole half piece in half again.
Then we positioned everything into place and rested the piece of paper on top. I thought our bridge was very stable as it was low down.

 Group Two
We built the tallest tower and the longest bridge. Our group stacked the paper on top of each other after making the paper into cylindrical shapes for the tallest tower. Some of us decided to keep the cylinders and put another longer sheet across them Others, like the group I was in , cut the paper and folded it in half. We then put a small section of the paper balancing on another piece set up like a camping tent. We repeated the same thing again and again, That was our bridge.
