Welcome to our submission for the Discover Primary Science and Maths award for 2017. This is our first year taking part in the the awards and we are very excited. We are applying for the Plaque of STEM excellence  as we have worked really hard throughout the school exploring and learning all about STEM. We understand the importance of STEM and have had great fun carrying out experiments.
We have created a blog to submit our log of evidence and this clearly shows all the steps and the corresponding activities that we took part in during the year.
Our AoSME number is OY001
Year:2016/17

Step 1: Science
For this step we carried out six hands on Science experiments under the four strands in classes throughout the school. We linked in with other curricula areas where possible as this shows the importance of integration and the use of Science in our everyday lives.

  • Living Things: Junior Infants went on a nature walk to observe the Signs of Autumn. Please click on link to see how they got on-Signs of Autumn
  • Living things: Junior Infants-First Class planted flowers and plants. See here to see how they got on-Planting
  • Energy and Forces: Senior Infants explored Magnets and which is the strongest magnet. Please click here to find out more-Magnets
  • Energy and Forces: First Class investigated the effect of gas on raisins. Please see here to find out Dancing raisins
  • Energy and Forces: Sixth Class investigated refraction in the classroom. Click here to find out more-Refraction
  • Materials: First Class investigated their coats. Please click here to find out more.Investigating Coats
  • Environmental Awareness and Care: Senior Infants explored the Signs of Spring in our area.Signs of Spring
Participated in Science Events/Projects

  1. We took part in Science Week in our school and carried out many fun experiments. Please see here to find out more Science Week
  2. Attended or hosted a Science Week event in November 2016-Classes visited Birr theatre for Science Week. See here for further details-Science Week

Step 2: Technology
In the second step, we worked in the area of technology. Technology plays a big part in our everyday school life and we integrate technology into our learning as much as possible.

Used computers, laptops, Ipads, Ipods, for Classwork
Our pupils use IPads to enhance their literacy and numeracy skills.
We use cameras, laptops and computers to help document different things and we find the role of ICT to be very beneficial in our school. Please click here to see how 4th class use IPads in their learning- Ipads in Class

Developed a blog/website/video
Twitter/ Website/Blog
Our school has an active twitter account and website. We have set up this blog to submit our entry for the plaque of excellence. Students are very involved in the administration of all these accounts and are regularly contributing.

  2. Website

Developed a PowerPoint Presentation
Children regularly use programs such as PowerPoint and find it a useful way to present their work. Please see photos of children presenting their PowerPoint Presentations- PowerPoint

Used technology to record and analyse data- Senior Infants worked with Sixth Class to analyse their data from their Spring Walk. They worked on a pie chart to display this information-Pie Chart

Participated in the Irish Computer Society Scratch Programme
First Class have participated in the Irish Computer Society programme. Please click here to see some examples of the children working on their projects  Scratch

Step 3 : Engineering

For the third step we engaged in the area of Engineering.

We used the Engineers Week resource from the DPSM website and found it very useful.

  1. We designed and made activities -5th Class- Bridge and Tower
  2. All classes attended Lego workshops-Lego workshop
  3. Investigated engineering in the local area Grants Engineering

Step 4:Maths
Throughout our Science investigation, we incorporated Maths as mush as possible and found out that both subjects work well together.
First Class also used their Maths and Science skills to make a lovely chocolate cake- Chocolate Cake
Senior Infants worked with 6th class an told them about their Spring walk and 6th class used a bar graph to record their results-please see their results here.Bar graph
Also 2nd Class incorporated their mathematical and science skills into their lesson on Capacity- please see here to see how they got on-Capacity

Step 5: Show and Tell.
Third Class visited first class to show them how sound waves travel. Please click here to see how they got on Sound Waves
Children presenting and explaining their STEM work-Showcase
Children also attended a joint Science event with another school - Joint Event
